Introduction


Punctuality is the act of person finishing his or her responsibilities on time. A punctual person always performs his work on time, arrive on time and never finds excuse for it. It also make us realize the importance of time. A person who is punctual will always know how to respect their time and others as well. It will also help us to build up character and gradually create a positive impression in the society. Punctuality is one of the key aspect to achieve success in life. Becoming a successful person it indicate achieving goals on time with proper planning and dedication.

It is very important for us to develop such quality from a very young age to lead ourselves and our country to words one goal. Therefore, punctuality is not only a key to success for an individual but also for the entire community, nation and global. 

If we look at the lives of the successful people, we will see that they valued time greatly. They never wasted time. If we wasting time, time will waste us. Mathama Gandhi is the most punctual person in the India.

Switzerland, Denmark, Japan, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea are the most punctual nations in the world.


         


Punctuality is one of the key performances indicates in an industry. It is fundamental for any industry. In the workplace Punctuality is everything. It doesn’t matter if you are a minute late or one hour late. Late is late and being late tells a lot about your character. There are few ways that we can easily change habitual lateness. It creates huge impact on your career and life.

  • Help to create a good impression
Making a great first impression can profoundly influence our lives. Maybe there’s a new job, or a potential relationship at stake. Whatever may hang in the balance, be ready to make a strong impression every time with this advice. (K Connon 26th February 2021)

  •  Help to reduce the stress  

Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological strain. Stress is your body’s response to anything that requires attention or action. (E Scott 07th November 2022)

Sometime the best way to manage your stress is be punctual. Work is done on time, arrive on time is reducing the unnecessary work pressure.


  • Increase the efficiency  

Time is most valuable resource, yet it is finite and fleeting. It cannot be saved, paused or rewound. It is constantly moving forward, regardless of how we use it. Therefore, we must use our time wisely and purposefully to make the most of very moment. (P McKinney 9th May 2023)

Being punctual always make you to manage your time more efficiently. It will help to maximize the productivity and minimize wasted time. 

  • Personal Development
Personal development is a process that drives you to improve your knowledge, skills and experience which can help you to achieve your goals. Personal development is a method of focusing your goals into a achievable steps. (K Martinelli 5th January 2023)

Peoples saying time is money. According to my view it is more precious than money. It is a limited resource that cannot be bought or saved. Each day grant us 1440 minutes. However according to the health guild line people may need to sleep at least 7 hours per day and we’re left with a total of 1020 minutes to use as we wish.

Punctuality help to use the limited time effectually and as a result of it can help to develop our character which create a positive impression in the society.   
 

  • Earning respect from others  
Earning respect is a biggest achievement in our life. Being on time shows respect for others.

If you respect others time, they will respect yours. This includes not being late for appointments, finish responsibilities on time, getting to the point fast ect. (J Labud 14th November 2017)

      Punctuality is an essential skill that impacts our personal as well as professional life. Even responding the emails or text should be done on time. Punctual person performs his personal things on time and used to keeping everything in perfect order. In our personal life it creates good character, save our time, enhance the success of the person. Ultimately, being a punctual person is a crucial skill for achieving success, maintaining integrity and success in their personal and professional lives. Being punctual in our professional life indicates enhance efficiency in the workplace, increase the productivity, boosts the confidence and reflects professionalism.

    Agreed. Punctuality is an important quality in the workplace. I think both employees and employers can play roles to promote it in within their organizations. By being role models, employers should set a good example by being punctual themselves and create a positive work environment which feels that the employees are more valued and respected at their workplaces.
    Further, by offering flexible work arrangements to the staff, they will be more punctual (Karatepe and Avci, 2017).

    Agreed with the comments you made. As you also mentioned as a first step, employers would probably love to be on time whenever and wherever they go or they do. But most important thing is punctuality is doesn’t come naturally to everyone. So how can we be punctual? By changing daily habits and views anyone can train themselves to be on time. Employers without being punctual is impossible task to change workforce. Employers has to show their team that they are punctual by being Plan, Prioritize and Prepare (3 P’s) by doing so, employers will demonstrate their respect for the team and their commitments to achieve organization goals and inspire them to do the same.

    On other hand a flexible work arrangement in the office means being able to quickly adjust to new circumstances as they wish. An employee who is flexible can change the plans according to the situations and employee can encourage this way of thinking by giving freedom to choose how they work.     It is also important to establish rules and regulations that are observed within the organization in order to maintain punctuality. An attendance policy might be used to frame these guidelines. Every person in the company is respected and treated as an individual, and they are all encouraged to contribute to the fullest extent possible by being responsible and on time. They must therefore consistently adhere by the employee attendance policy and process.

      Agreed with you. Maintained well managed attendance system is one of the main policy to maintain punctuality. Ensure to maintain each employee’s attendance records correctly and up to date. Review these records frequently will helpful to identify patterns of employee’s punctuality. Since attendance system is one of the essential key to success of the organization it has to maintain with high security system. As a result of maintain an attendance system employer able to manage and reduce absenteeism and improve the productivity and the performance of the organizations.     Agree with your comments. How can we address to employee lateness? According to my view, organizations have to establish clear attendance policies and provide support to help employees to manage their time effectively such as allocated work schedule. By following these, employers can improve employee engagement and productivity.

    Employers often have workplace attendance policies outlining steps employees must take when reporting late or not coming in, often requiring reporting before shift start or providing doctor's notes. Repeated non-compliance or lateness without valid reasons may lead to discipline.(S R Ball, 2013)

After adjusting for a wide range of factors, they discover that a 2.3 percent decrease in daily sales is linked to a 1% increase in tardiness and absenteeism. However, the study also revealed something that might be even more significant for retailers: tardiness and absenteeism can spread like a virus and burden the staff members who have to cover the gaps. These results may be particularly significant if the economy contracts and hiring becomes more competitive following a wave of both quiet and noisy resignations caused by pandemic fatigue; As a result, you must employ several techniques to deal with it. However, some advice is always applicable. Having open discussions, maintaining a good work ethic, Assist tardy workers in learning how to arrive at work on time, Issue a caution, Establish a policy of patience and lateness for employees. However, if the person is punctual the system will not suffer much.

      Yes, according to your comments it is difficult to handle most senior people in any organizations. If they are not punctual, as an employer we should have to understand the reasons. Some time there can be a valid reason. It could be a personal issue or transportation problem. Identify the problems and provide suitable solutions is must.

      Plan – Plaining is a one of the method to organize our works. It is predetermined course of action how to achieve the tasks. Plaining is always forces what to do, how to do, when to do. Plaining is nothing but thinking before the action take place.

      Prioritize - According to the worklist people need to immediately attend the most important task, then look the second important and the third by considering time allocation. Further if we want, we can divide different categories such as Important and urgent, Important and not urgent, Urgent but not important, Neither important /nor important.

      Prepare – Once we have planed and prioritize the tasks people has to prepare to complete the allocated tasks. Do a quick recall.

    Interesting and important topic for both of personal and organizational welbeing. Punctuality is timely topic in most of south Asian countries such as Srilanka. Because there are lot of lapses still remain in time management and timely working in individuals and also some organizations. So this is useful to individuals to identify what is punctuality, how to be punctual, how it involves for day today life and what are the importance of it.       Individual punctuality can have significant impact for the individual as well as the organization. It can be help to maintain the organization reputation, build team moral, build customer relationship, employee satisfaction ect.

      It goes without saying that businesses need people to show up on time to get the job done. Although this seems like common sense, you will probably encounter a few employees who are chronically late. For business leaders, tardiness needs to be addressed because it affects productivity and ultimately for the reputation of an organization. (K Leanord, 2019)

Punctuality is one of the key to achieve the organization targets with efficiency. Sometimes relaxed approach effects to discipline of the employees and can be missed the deadlines and ultimately reduce the productivity.       Yes Kapila. Agree with you. Specially in Sri Lanka we can seek lot of unpunctual people. I sadly to say Sri Lankans are notorious for their inherent inability to respect time. They always have excuses for their tardiness. Most of the excuses are such as traffic, no buses or trains, raining, family emergency, sickness, sick child, funeral to attend, doctor’s appointment. According to my view best suggestions are the Flexible work arrangements and Lead by example. Other suggestions will be Introduce efficient time management training, Incentives and recognition system, conduct workshops and seminars to improve morale. What is your opinion ?

      I believe that Punctuality is a discipline that you have to stimulate on your own. Hence, conducting motivational workshops may be fruitful. But still the necessity to be punctual may need to become a habit from the young age of Sri Lankans.

Most of the Sri Lankans not taken this matter seriously due to the reasons which I have mention my above comments. Further I would like to mention Discipline and punctuality were some of the weaknesses of Sri Lankans even at the highest level. Being passionate in the job is as important as having goals, objectives and a mission.
