  What is Work Life Balance???????

Work Life balance means the level of prioritization between personal and professional activities responsibilities. It means achieving a healthy balance between work and personal life. Specially in today's work life balance is essential to maintain productivity , physical and mental health. Employees who has work life balance can focus on their jobs while finding time for personal events , family events , friends and also their rest.

The challenge of work-life balance is without question one of the most significant struggles faced by modern men - Stephen Covey, an American author.

Work life balance is typically defined as the amount of time you spend doing your job and the time you spend with your loved ones (Coursera, 2023) Work Life Balance is the degree to which an individual is able to achieve their professional goals while also making time for family, friends and personal interests.(J Rumage, 2023)

Why is Work Life Balance is  Important???

Having a healthy work life balance is important for your productivity , physical , mental and happiness and maintaining healthy relationship with people in life. Maintaining work life balance is important for healthy work environment, ensuring equal time for work and personal tasks without stress. Understanding this work life balance helps to overcome negative feeling and develop more personal relationships while achieving workplace goals.    

Work-life balance is usually defined as an equilibrium between your professional and personal life. When you keep things balanced, no single element of your life dominates and overwhelms the others. (K Cherry, 2023)

Google is known for its generous benefits and flexible work arrangements. Employees can enjoy unlimited paid time off, telecommuting options and other facilities such as gyms, massage rooms and cafes. Google also has a strong culture of work life balance and encourage employees to take breaks and spend time with their loved ones.

Netflix also has a strong culture of trust and independency and gives employees 100% freedom to manage their own work.

HubSpot is a software company that is known for its people-first culture. Employees enjoy unlimited paid time off, flexible working hours and other benefits such as childcare and fitness classes. HubSpot also has a strong emphasis on work life balance and encourage employees to take breaks and spend time with their loved ones.

  1. Very true. Work Life Balance is of utmost importance for our overall well being. We need to balance both. But, how many organizations really practice this. Are there statistics available? Especially, in Sri Lanka. Well only recognized large corporations like the ones listed in Stock Exchange. Organizations here respect there employees and employees reciprocally show their loyalty. But, there is other situation employees who try to take advantage of this friendly and respectful culture. This needs to be carefully handled by Management.

  2. Adding more to your blog, concentrating on work life balance is more important for an organization for achievement of end result. All are doing a job because they need to spend their entire life happily and make their loved ones happy. However, If they are not able to manage their work life due to various work conditions with the employment (High work pressure from the management, unrealistic targets, long working hours etc...) it will be negatively effect physical and mental health conditions of the employer ,which will leads to demotivation and less productivity. This will ultimately effect the achievement of overall objectives of the organization. Therefore organization should have a proper mechanism to ensure the wok life balance of their employees.

Greenhaus and colleagues (2003) further suggest that work life balance is defined by three key, and interconnected, components: firstly, “time balance" which refers to equal time being given to both work and nonwork roles; secondly, “involvement balance" which refers to equal levels of psychological involvement in both work and family roles; and finally, “satisfaction balance" which refers to equal levels of satisfaction in both work and family roles. Therefore, in order to achieve a work life balance these components should be considered.

Due to the workload, stress and lack of work-life balance can negatively impact employees physical and mental health. They Measure only the output and results, not the number of hours they work.
